On Saturday, March 7th a team of 21 excited team members arrived in Les Cayes. On Sunday we went to two church services and met the kids! The first service was in Les Cayes. We had no clue about the world we were about to enter and it was a culture shock for many of the team members. Our team was overwhelmed and inspired by the passion of the Haitian church goers. The second service was in Ducis and there were over 100 people crammed into the church. A special moment was when each age group sang a song to the church. We returned to Les Cayes after church where we served the children a feast.
The kids were so excited, eating every last bit with wide smiles on their faces.
During the past few days our team has immersed themselves in this experience and in our love for the kids. Every member of our team has connected with the children in a special way. A few of our favorite memories include the kids teaching us the steps to a Haitian dance, playing soccer, playing with clay and making pottery, teaching poetry in the schools, and seeing the newly painted basketball court.
At the end of each day we reflect on our highs and lows of the day. More often than not we all have an endless amount of highs and very few lows. In everyday life it is often easy to get caught up in the negatives and things that are going wrong. However, here it is difficult to dwell on the lows with the faith and endless smiles of all the children. We cannot wait for all of the fun experiences the rest of the week will bring.
