The summer ’12 volunteer team is just 2 days away from departing to Haiti! Over the past 6 months we have received many applications from people living across the USA and Canada. Unfortunately there are limited spaces on these trips. However, we hope that the individuals who applied but will not be going will join us on a future endeavor to Haiti! (see our volunteer page for future scheduled trip dates).
Our diverse group consists of 16 individuals living in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, California and Quebec. Our volunteers are project managers, students, nonprofit executives, and school administrators. Some members of the team have been to Haiti before and one of our volunteers even speaks Haitian Creole! We are very excited to have such a well rounded group and can’t wait for the children to meet them.
We will be landing in Port-au-Prince, Haiti at around 1:00 p.m. and then a lunch is planned before driving to the Mercy House in Les Cayes, Haiti. On Wednesday we will be spending the day with the children in Chantal and begin our planned activities including building a soccer field, English lessons, art therapy activities and many group games. On Thursday, August 2nd we will spend the day at a beautiful beach in Port Salut with the children. Our day will consist of swim lessons, soccer games, bubbles and a very special beach lunch. The children have just been to the beach with volunteer trips in the past and it will definitely be the highlight of the week for many members of the team. On Friday we will be in Chantal again working on the soccer field as well as some new activities such as painting, beading lessons, coloring, and re-setting our tire playground. On Sunday we will be attending an exceptional church service in Les Cayes. The children will be picked up from Chantal in the morning and will meet the volunteer team at the church for a Creole service followed by an English service. Afterwards there will be a tour of a large school nearby and then the entire team, children included, will go to the Mercy House in Les Cayes for a group dinner followed by some fun activities. Monday will be our last day in Chantal to finish up projects and conclude all activities. Later that afternoon we will be heading back to Pour-au-Prince for our morning departure to the USA on Tuesday, August 7th.
During the course of the week we may, time permitting, visit the site of our new home in Codere which will be opening soon, pending our 5k Codere Home Opening fundraiser. We are very excited to be able to offer a new life to a new group of children – sponsorship for these children is available here.
The children are all extremely excited to meet the volunteer team and can’t wait to have a fabulous week! Please stay tuned for photos and updates posted throughout the week on our Facebook page and trip update blog as well. Comments left on our blog posts and Facebook will be shared with the team. You can also easily send a volunteer a message by submitting this form. We sincerely appreciate any and all comments!
